We presented research updates, including how our research does good, to a panel of judges representing the Do Good Institute and a variety of current Gemstone students.
Expert Meeting
October 9, 2024
We met with Mike Bednarski, the Chief of Fisheries at Virginia’s Department of Wildlife and Resources. He gave us great insights into how policies on marine invasive species are usually put into place, and how current invasive fish are handled by the government. We plan to keep meeting with him to inform the policy sub-team.
Beginning ENM

Our ecological niche modeling data is starting to come together! We created a map of all current lionfish sightings, which is the "before" of our model.
First junior meeting
August 28, 2024
Today, we met for the first time as juniors! Now that our methodology is set, we're ready to jump right into data collection to advance our research. Big things planned for this year!
Proposal Defense
February 16, 2024
We defended our research proposal for Gemstone staff, our mentor, and an outside expert. We received great feedback especially from Dr. Lovell and Dr. Miller. We are now prepared to begin research with their guidance!
Expert Meeting

We met with Dr. Tye Kindinger, who works with NOAA and is an expert on lionfish. After discussing lionfish physiology and current habitat, we have good ideas on starting points for our own methodology.
